Month twenty-three

Eva is on the verge of turning two, although she prefers to tell people that she is five. This month
we met up with my father in San Francisco for the day. Carlo and Enrico went to the Exploratorium
while my father, his girlfriend, and I walked by the very windy bay.

The next weekend there were two birthday parties to attend. One offered kite-flying on the beach and
the other had a game that seemed to resemble rugby. Carlo participated fully in both activities.
In the "rugby" game the oldest boy kept throwing the littler ones to the ground. I asked Carlo if
he was ok with the rough play. He replied, "I like it."

We celebrated both Dia de los Muertos and Halloween. The children and I went to a celebration of Dia
de los Muertos at the Museum of Art and History in Santa Cruz. Carlo and Eva made paper flowers and
masks as well as examining the ofrenda. Halloween was low-key. Neither child was enthusiastic about
dressing in costume. However, they were thrilled about passing out candy and at one point went out
on the sidewalk to call out to children passing by.
