Granada - under the Alhambra

The Alhambra and Palacio Nazaries sit uneasily with the Palacio
Carlos V and Convento de San Francisco - each marking their patrons' period of glory.
But before them all were the Romans who first settled in this area, and then lost out to the Visigoths.
There are many miradors from which to contemplate the passage of power,
while also enjoying the beauty that spreads out before the Sierra Nevadas.

A side look at the Alhambra. For those who do not know the name Alhambra comes from the Arabic words for red castle. Constructed as a fortress in the 9th century, it served its purpose through the 18th century when Napoleonic troops used it as a barracks. It was also used as a prison with prisoners being lowered by ropes below into the dark hole awaiting them.

Even with its history of less than glorious uses, it bears an attractive force. Sometimes on break between classes I walk up the hill from my centre to take in my favorite view. Standing at the edge of the hill is the Torre de la Vela (the watchtower).

Credit for this photo is due to Orlando as I forgot my camera on this day. He took some wonderful photos and even dealt patiently with my requests for different shots.

You will see that there is a remarkable difference between the beginning of March and the end of April in terms of foliage (and of temperature).

One of the reflecting pool in the palace grounds that Orlando took and that I played with (the photo, not the pool).
