Ubeda and Baeza

It was a Saturday tour with our sanctimonious art historian that brought Enrico and I to Ubeda and Baeza. The day started with breakfast at a bus station, where our guide told Enrico he knew Mexico better than him and showed us his saint card of the Virgin de Guadalupe to prove it. We then travelled with art historians and language students to visit two cities for which our guide termed as the best example of Spanish Renaissance.

This chapel, la Sacrada Capilla de El Salvador (in Ubeda) was designed by two of the best architects of the period, Diego de Siloe and Andres de Vandelvira.

Allowing one to look out from both sides of one's house, this corner balcony was apparently quite unique for its time (and still is). It was a signature of the architect who designed this house of a noble family. I would have loved to been able to have approach it from the inside, but we were on the tight schedule of the tour. ( This is Palacio de Vazquez de Molina. Juan Vazquez de Molina was a secretary to Carlos V.)
